Välinge gets US patent for recycling of laminate floors.

Viken, 瑞典 -

US 7, 811,489 protects a method to recycle old laminate floor panels.
Several billion m2 of laminate floors have been installed over the years since the floor was invented in 1977. Välinge anticipates that large volumes will become obsolete in the next coming years mainly due to new attractive designs and mechanical locking systems that trigger and facilitate replacement.

Välinge initiated in 2006 a new R&D project aiming to find a way to recycle laminate floors in an environmental friendly and cost efficient way. Välinge anticipated that environmental aspects will become more important and that wood prices will increase. A new method to recycle a complete laminate floor panel was developed in 2007. Old laminate floor panels are mechanically cut into small particle and mixed with binders. The particles and the binders are thereafter pressed and formed to a sheet shaped material.

This recycled sheet shaped material could be used as a core in a new traditional laminate floor panel or a powder based WFF floor panel. Such panels could be recycled many times over and over again and no raw material will be lost. Laminate and WFF floors are now more “green” than ever before.

Old laminate floors could also be milled to wood powder and used as raw material in the surface layer of a new WFF floor panel based on the Välinge powder technology.

This new recycling method is expected to save raw materials and eliminate all gases that are created when an old laminate floor panel is burned.

The new powder based WFF floors are even easier to recycle since the production method and raw materials are adapted to facilitate recycling.

Välinge will apply a very flexible licensing model to encourage the industry to use the Välinge recycling method and to preserve the environment.

Välinge has already made a major contribution to preserve the environment. The mechanical locking that Välinge invented in 1994 has eliminate 100 million glue bottles/year that would have been used to glue laminate and wood floorings.
