Välinge has obtained another 350 granted patents and extends the portfolio with embossing and bevel technologies

Viken, Sweden -

Record high number of patents granted to Välinge in 2017, adding 350 new patents to its already existing patent portfolio that now includes more than 1,850 granted and enforceable patents. Välinge has further been extending the scope of its patent protection for wood and laminate floorings with EIR, waxing, locking and bevel technologies through a non-assertion agreement with Unilin.

During 2017 Välinge has obtained another 350 new granted patents. More than 200 of those patents are related to floor locking technologies such as 2G and 5G fold down locking systems for wood, laminate, powder based flooring and resilient flooring categories such as LVT, WPC and SPC.

Välinge is the proprietor of more than 1,850 granted and enforceable patents, and has expanded its IP portfolio significantly in the past years both within floor locking technology but also in other technology fields such as LVT/WPC/SPC, powder technology, digital printing, nano technology and locking systems for furniture in order to offer an extensive patent protection to its licensees.

Välinge has further broadened the possibility to offer its licensees a full protection for all relevant patents related to bevels and embossing through a non-assertion agreement with Unilin. This offer also includes among others locking systems, waxed profiles, bevelled edges in various embodiments as well as embossing technology including EIR and matt/gloss technologies.

Bevelled edges and embossing-in-register are features that significantly enhance laminate and wood flooring products by giving them a natural look and feel.

“This non-assertion agreement with Unilin and the extended patent protection it offers does not only eliminate market uncertainties. It also provides our licensees with an increased freedom to offer surface technologies such as deep embossing and EIR, as well as bevel technologies and waxed locking systems among others to create additional unique selling points to their products”, says Per Nygren, EVP, Välinge Innovation.

Unilin has through the years been developing an extensive patent portfolio within those areas. By enforcing these rights, they have shown that these patents are relevant and need to be respected. For example, in June 2017, a US district court awarded damages to Unilin and granted a permanent injunction against the company Wood Floor LLC for wilful infringement of Unilin’s bevel and embossed-in-register patented technologies.

Moreover, Unilin has also been granted the right to grant non-assertion undertakings to certain Välinge locking and bevel technologies (such as decorative and bevelled edges).

“Due to our substantial investments in R&D Välinge has continuously been able to bring new and valuable innovations to the market. With our own patents as a solid base and in combination with our numerous cross-license and non-assertion agreements with relevant patent holders, we are proud to be able to offer our licensees a strong and broad patent portfolio. With several thousand applications in pipeline today, Välinge always search for new enhanced solutions to contribute to increase the added value of our licensees’ products. Our latest innovations are displayed at the Domotex fair currently on-going in Hannover until Monday January 15th”, says Mr. Niclas Håkansson, CEO, Välinge Innovation.
